Carols Day Care Centre

Sponsor: Woolworths Trust

Woolworths Trust celebrates their 10th birthday this year and Newkidz on the Block was chosen to be one of their partners in this celebration.

10 centres in need of repairs and maintenance, across the Cape Town area, were chosen and will be upgraded between April and October this year.

The first project took place on Wednesday the 24th April when just over 20 Woolworths staff members transformed a once derelict piece of council land into a colourful, practical and safe play ground environment for over 90 children who attend Carol’s Day Care Centre in Mitchells Plain.

In one day:

  • A perimeter fence with double gate was erected
  • A double swing and a jungle gym was erected
  • The three perimeter walls were painted and beautifully decorated with murals
  • A flower garden was created
  • Play-play roads were painted on the cement for the children’s enjoyment
  • Toys, a television set and a DVD player was donated

The sun was hidden behind the clouds for most of the morning which enabled the volunteers to work to full capacity before the heat set in. The staff members were really amazing and a pleasure to work with. Their jovial banter amongst each other created a fun environment and the work was ahead of schedule throughout the day – well done!

The smiles on the children’s faces and the gratitude from Carol, when the project was handed over at the end of a hard day’s work, made the volunteers realize it was all worthwhile.

Thank you Woolworths Trust for making a tangible difference in the lives of more than 90 little children.
