Nokhwezi EduCare

9 October  2013

Beautiful weather awaited the Stores team on Wednesday morning when they arrived at the Nokhwezi EduCare in Mfuleni all ready to get started for the 9th Woolworths Trust project. After everyone had signed in; been allocated to one of the four teams and heard the briefing on the day’s proceedings it was ready, steady, go! And wow did they go.

This EduCare building is a large single storey building but with Sue Ann as one of the many “fast” painters who rolled the walls in a jiffy, by lunch time at 13h00 most of the work was complete.
Theo from Mural Maniac drew some wonderful artwork on the walls … a bull’s eye for the children to kick the ball against and even the old VW beetle and Datsun car wrecks in the playground got a new lease on life. Speelgoedland came along and repaired and replaced the broken swings and Lourens Roadmarking re-sprayed the soccer pitch so professionally, for free!

We set out that morning to paint the exterior walls of the EduCare; repair and paint the play structure and brighten up the garden but once again, the plan was multiplied and the finished product was amazing!
This phenomenally fast and hard-working team handed over a beautiful finished product to Femelia, the principal, who shook her head in disbelief and said “I have a new building again”:

    • Painted the exterior of this large single storey EduCare
    • Painted delightful murals on the walls; cars and concrete tunnels in the play ground
    • Created a very creative veggie garden out of tyres
    • Painted the soccer pitch
    • Repaired and painted the two play structures
    • Painted all the tyres around the playground
    • And painted the two stoep areas at the entrances of the building

The children had been indoors during the day but to see their faces when they came outside to receive their Mandela Day packs … they waited patiently in their lines but their excitement to have their bag put on their back … one had to witness that moment.

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” ― Nelson Mandela
Our sincere thanks go to Natalie, Bradley, your staff and Woolworths Trust for making a difference in the lives of the people in Mfuleni. It was a privilege and delight working with you all.
