Place of Blessing

SPONSOR: Woolworth Trust

29 – 31 October 2013

Our 10th and final project with Woolworths Trust this year and it was certainly a grand finale!

This was the biggest project in this series and even though the weather was somewhat on the wet side, it didn’t hinder the work nor the enthusiasm of the volunteers.

Murial, the principal of this centre, gave us her wish list:

  • Fix the kitchen to be functional again
  • Brighten up her “dull” classrooms
  • Install swings

We set out to do just this and once again this was extended far beyond our expectations.

When Murial arrived on Thursday afternoon with her little children for the handover, she was speechless.

Woolworths Trust and all the volunteers had given her the following:

  • Painted the exterior of 2 large single storey buildings; a double 6ft container and another smaller container
  • Painted the interior of the aforementioned
  • Decorated all of them with the most amazing murals, inside and out J
  • Fixed the container kitchen with a new ceiling; new floor; new light, new cupboards and white board
  • Provided shade in the courtyard area
  • Carpeted the toddlers classroom; the principal’s office; the sick bay; the after-care container and the new baby room
  • Created a new office for the principal
  • Created a new sick bay area with new bedding for the bed
  • Created a baby section and erected two camp cot’s and gave them blankets and a  nappy changing mat
  • Fixed all cupboards in all the classrooms
  • Did electrical; plumbing and general repair work
  • Replaced damaged and installed new cornices where needed
  • Fixed razor wire along the entire perimeter fence and fixed the entrance gate pillars
  • Painted all the burglar bars white
  • Painted the children’s desks in the Grade R classroom bright colours
  • Waterproofed the after-care container with a new roof
  • Gave the after-care 30 lap desks
  • Installed blinds to all windows
  • Paved a section of the courtyard to help eliminate the sandy area
  • Installed 6 new swings and painted the existing play structure
  • Filled a Wasteman skip with rubble and rubbish
  • And did a lot of cleaning

All this while dodging the rain drops!
