Fikelela Children’s Centre 2014-08-29T13:05:57+00:00

SPONSOR: WOOLWORTHS TRUST

Wednesday to Friday – 21st to 23rd May 2014

Fikelela Children’s Centre is registered with the Department of Social Development and is an outreach program of the Fikelela Aids Project.

It was started in 2001 and is situated in Khayelitsha. It serves the area of the Western Cape and provides a safe, secure and nurturing home-based care for up to 40 children between the ages of 0 and 8 years who are infected or affected by HIV/Aids. All of the children have been abandoned, neglected, abused or orphaned where many of them in the care at Fikelela are nursed back to health and put on anti-retroviral medication, where necessary.

Fikelela Children’s Centre provides short term residential care. Once children are nursed back to health, they are placed back into the community with supported foster parents. Their commitment is to reunify children with their families or where this is not possible, to place the children into good foster homes, which are carefully screened and monitored by their social workers.

Fikelela has a very high success rate of placing children.

Between Wednesday the 21st and Friday the 23rd May, Newkidz on the Block will facilitate and co-ordinate an extreme makeover of the Fikelela Children’s Centre, with the help of 190 Woolworths staff members who will be volunteering their time and skills. There are numerous contractors who will be involved in this project too and they will be responsible for specialized work i.e. electrical; plumbing; cabinet making; spray painting of beds and general handyman work.

The envisaged finished product is going to be amazing because with professionals like Joos Joinery; Camilla Fraser Interiors; Jacks Paint & Hardware; Vertica Electrical; The Renuvators; Blind IT; Cape Core Construction; Mural Maniac; Thompsons Plumbing; the financial injection from Woolworths Trust and the manpower from their employees, both interior and exterior improvements are planned to be completed in the very limited time frame.

This is the Newkidz on the Block’s 11th project with Woolworths Trust, in a short space of 2-years, and it is a privilege for our organization to be associated with such a prestigious company who have the heart to help people at grass route level.
