After the temporary safe care period has concluded and the child cannot be reunited with their biological parents or family, the child needs to be placed in foster care.
Foster care entails that foster parents become the legal caregiver of the child for a period. This period can vary from 6 months, 2 years or until the child reaches the age of 18.
Foster parents are screened by social workers in the areas where they live. A foster parent receives a foster child care grant for each child in their foster care. Foster parents work very closely with the social worker responsible for the placement of the child to help to create stability in the child’s life.
