Carol's Day Care Centre (24 April 2013)
Sponsor: Woolworths (Staff initiative)
This centre is in Mitchells Plain. They don't have a suitable play area for the children and it is here that we plan to fence off an area; install a play structure; create a flower garden; paint the perimeter vibrecrete walls and generally make it a colourful play area for the children.
Heatherdale Children's Home (29 - 30 April 2013)
Sponsor: Woolworths (Staff initiative)
This children's home is located in the Athlone area and accommodates approx 43 boys and girls, up to the age of 18, all in need of care.
The boy's dormitories need some "tender loving care" and so we propose that the repainting of the rooms; repairing the cupboards; replacing the soft finishes and general maintenance will create a pleasant environment for these young boys to live in.
Zanethemba Kidz Haven (15 May 2013)
Sponsor: Woolworths (Staff initiative)
This educare is in the Philippi area and run by Vicky. Newkidz on the block replaced their previous shack with a sturdy and much larger Wendy house. The exterior of this structure is in need of varnishing now. There is also no shade outside to protect the children from the hot summer sun and so here we plan to erect shade cover. Vicky is a good woman who manages her centre very well.
Free to Grow EduCare (30 - 31 May 2013)
Sponsor: Woolworths (Staff initiative)
This educare is in the Blue Downs community. Belinda is a good principal who takes initiative and does the best she can with what she has. Their current one-room building structure is sound but it needs to be brightened up and finished off so that it is a conducive environment for children to learn in.
Hands of compassion (21 - 22 May 2013)
Sponsor: Woolworths (Staff initiative)
Glenda and her team prepare and serve a hearty meal to over 100 hungry people in the Retreat area every week. We visited them when they were serving meals one day and were astounded at the need. The building they meet in is thirsty for a fresh coat of paint and the kitchen desperately needs to be improved.
Khuti's Homecare for disabled children (31 July 2013)
Sponsor: Woolworths (Staff initiative)
Khuti is an unsung hero. She is the voice for disabled children. Khuti has tirelessly committed her life to caring for children with severe disabilities.
Breadline Africa donated revamped containers for their accommodation and now all that is needed is to upgrade the garden around the building so that the children can sit outside under a tree or on the grass. Currently their surroundings is just sand.
SOS Children's Village (18 - 20 September 2013)
Sponsor: Woolworths (Staff initiative)
This children's home is located in Thornton. It is a large facility made up of cottages where the children live in "families" with a carer.
We propose that we improve these two cottages by doing general maintenance; upgrading the kitchen; repairing the bedroom cupboards; giving the interior a fresh coat of paint and supplying new soft finishes.
Nokhwezi EduCare (6 September 2013)
Sponsor: Woolworths (Staff initiative)
This educare is run by Femelia who we have known for the past 4-years. Like most educares in the community, the school fees that they receive is minimal and even with the government subsidy it is difficult to keep a hand on much needed maintenance. The exterior of the building needs a fresh coat of paint as well as the playground needs repair work and the garden some brightening up.
Place of blessing (29 - 31 October 2013)
Sponsor: Woolworths (Staff initiative)
This educare is in Guguletu and is managed by Muriel, a highly respected senior woman. She has a great heart for kids and established this well functioning educare & soup kitchen.
This is a large project for the Woolworths team; Newkidz will have everything required complete all the work planned; namely maintenance; painting; upgrading the soup kitchen; enhancing the existing vegetable garden and more.
Khulangolwazi EduCare (8 October 2013)
Sponsor: Woolworths (Staff initiative)
Setyenzwa runs this large educare in Khayelitsha. We completed a project there a number of years ago when we installed new play structures and gave them a new Grade R classroom in the form of a container. It is time to give the exterior of this centre a fresh coat of paint and to repair the play structures.
